About Us


What is CIPHI?

First incorporated in 1934 as the Canadian Institute of Sanitary Inspectors, the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors has evolved into the only organization that specifically represents the interest of environmental public health professionals in Canada.

CIPHI Alberta is the provincial branch of CIPHI that represents the field and professionals of Environmental Public Health in Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Mission and Vision

Mission

CIPHI represents and unites Environmental Public Health professionals across Canada. We advance the profession and field of Environmental Public Health through certification, advocacy, education and professional competencies. Through this we protect the health of all Canadians.

The Alberta Branch is one of the provincial chapters of CIPHI and is the only association that specifically represents the interests of Public Health Inspectors, Environmental Health Officers, and other allied Environmental Public Health professionals in the province of Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Environmental Public Health Professionals deal with the association between the physical environment and human health and are valuable resource in protecting and promoting health through monitoring and, where necessary, controlling the environmental factors that affect health.

Community Service Award

The Community Service Award recognizes a member of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (Alberta Branch) who is working in the field of Environmental Public Health (EPH) in Alberta, Northwest Territories or Nunavut and has received their Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada).  This award is given to a member of CIPHI (Alberta Branch) who volunteers their time and resources in the community.

Court Case Award

The Court Case Award recognizes a member of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (Alberta Branch) who works in the field of Environmental Public Health (EPH) in Alberta, the Northwest Territories or Nunavut and has received their Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada). This award is given to a member of CIPHI (Alberta Branch) who in the preceding year has had an EPH situation proceed to the Alberta, Northwest Territories or Nunavut court system in an effort to protect and promote public health. The member dedicated time and effort from the beginning of the situation to the presentation of the case in the courts by way of meticulous documentation and providing a clear and concise brief for the courts to review.

Environmental Public Health Manager Award

The Environmental Public Health Award recognizes a member of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (Alberta Branch) who works in the field of Environmental Public Health (EPH) in Alberta, the Northwest Territories or Nunavut and acts in a management capacity for an EPH program. This award is given to a member of CIPHI (Alberta Branch) in a management position who, in the eyes of a member(s) of the CIPHI (AB Branch) has demonstrated commitment and support of the CIPHI (AB Branch) and its activities and/or shown perseverance in advancing the profession of Certified Public Health Inspectors.

This award is given to a member of CIPHI (Alberta Branch) who, in the eyes of their colleagues, has had to deal with a particularly challenging situation in the field of EPH during the preceding year. This individual has shown unwavering dedication, perseverance and professionalism during the difficult circumstances.

The award is given to a member of CIPHI (Alberta Branch) who’s innovative thinking and dedication to the field of EPH has led to changes in the practice of EPH by their employer, within the province or on a national level

LE Stewart Award

The LE Stewart Award is named in honour of a man who worked diligently on behalf of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors and the field of Environmental Health in Alberta. It is awarded to a member of the Alberta Branch, who, in the eyes of his or her colleagues, has made a significant contribution to our association, the profession and/or the community

President's Award for Academic Achievement

The Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (Alberta Branch) believes that outstanding academic achievement in the Environmental Health Program at Concordia University College of Alberta deserves recognition. A cash award of $750 will be granted to one student from each academic year that has:

  • Graduated from the program and;
  • Demonstrated the highest academic achievement in the program.

Long-Term Service Award

The Long-Term Service Award recognizes a member of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (Alberta Branch) who has been in the field of Environmental Public Health (EPH) in Alberta, Northwest Territories or Nunavut for at least ten years from the date stated on the nominee's Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada).

CG More Award

The Dr. CG More Trophy is given to the person with the lowest gross score (essentially the best golfer) at the Annual CIPHI Alberta Golf Tournament.

Dave Davis Award

The Dave Davis Award is given to the person with the low net score (their actual score minus a calculated handicap) at the Annual CIPHI Alberta Golf Tournament. The original plaque was donated by Keith Lee, Phil Lundrie and Dan Richen the year of Dave's untimely passing.
